Common Myths About Hypnotherapy — The Truth Can Change Your Life

Hello, it's Tara here.

If you’ve ever been curious about hypnotherapy but felt unsure, hesitant, or even a little sceptical - you’re not alone. Hypnotherapy is one of those therapies that’s often misunderstood, thanks to movies, stage shows, and long-standing myths.

As a hypnotherapist, I hear these concerns all the time. So today, I want to gently clear things up, dispel the most common myths, and explain how personalised hypnotherapy - whether online or in person - can be a powerful tool for breaking bad habits, shifting mindset, and creating a happier, more productive life.

Let’s start with the myths.

Myth 1: “I’ll lose control or be made to do something against my will”

This is by far the most common fear - and it couldn’t be further from the truth.

Hypnotherapy is not mind control. You are never unconscious, powerless, or “taken over.” In fact, you are fully aware and always in control. Hypnosis is simply a deeply relaxed, focused state - similar to daydreaming or getting lost in a book.

You cannot be made to do or say anything that goes against your values or beliefs. Hypnotherapy works with your mind, not against it.

Myth 2: “Only weak-minded people can be hypnotised”

Actually, the opposite is true.

People who benefit most from hypnotherapy are often imaginative, reflective, and mentally engaged. Being able to focus, visualise, and follow guidance is a strength - not a weakness.

Hypnosis isn’t about being “suggestible” in a negative sense; it’s about being open to positive change.

Myth 3: “Hypnotherapy is just relaxation — it doesn’t create real change”

While hypnotherapy is deeply relaxing, it goes much further than that.

Hypnotherapy works directly with the subconscious mind - where habits, emotional patterns, beliefs, and automatic behaviours live. This is why it can be so effective for:

  • Breaking habits like smoking, overeating, or nail-biting

  • Reducing anxiety and stress

  • Building confidence and self-worth

  • Shifting negative thought patterns

  • Improving motivation, focus, and emotional balance

When sessions are personalised, they address your specific triggers, experiences, and goals - which is where real, lasting change happens.

Myth 4: “Online hypnotherapy isn’t as effective as in-person sessions”

This is a big one — and I’m happy to say it’s simply not true.

Online hypnotherapy is just as effective as in-person work. Your subconscious mind doesn’t know whether you’re sitting in my therapy room or relaxing in your own home - it responds to voice, guidance, and intention.

In fact, many clients find online sessions even more effective because:

  • They’re in a familiar, comfortable environment

  • They feel more relaxed and open

  • There’s no travel stress

  • Sessions fit more easily into busy lives

Whether we work together online or in person, the therapy remains fully personalised, deeply focused, and results-driven.

Myth 5: “Hypnotherapy is a quick fix with no real depth”

Hypnotherapy isn’t about forcing change - it’s about creating alignment between your conscious goals and subconscious patterns.

Some people notice shifts quickly; others experience gradual, layered change. Both are valid, and both can be powerful. What matters is that the process respects you - your pace, your experiences, and your nervous system. True transformation happens when change feels safe, supported, and sustainable.

The Power of Personalised Hypnotherapy

At Mindset & Body Therapy, I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all approaches. Every session I offer is tailored specifically to you - your habits, your mindset, your emotional landscape, and your goals. Whether you want to:

  • Break a long-standing habit

  • Feel calmer and more in control

  • Improve confidence and motivation

  • Create a healthier relationship with yourself

  • Move towards a happier, more productive life

Personalised hypnotherapy works by helping your mind and body move in the same direction - gently, effectively, and with lasting impact.

My Final Thought

Hypnotherapy isn’t mysterious, scary, or about giving up control. It’s a practical, evidence-based way of working with your mind - rather than fighting it.

If you’ve been feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or ready for change but unsure how to get there, hypnotherapy could be the missing piece.

And whether we work together online or in person, the goal is always the same: helping you feel lighter, clearer, more empowered, and more at home in yourself.
